Fund chief warns that crunch will get worse

A New York hedge-fund manager who made some of the biggest profits from the global credit crisis said yesterday that there was worse to come.
John Paulson told the Financial Times at a conference in Monaco: “The housing market shows no signs of stabilising and the problems will spread to other areas, including non-residential construction and consumer spending.”
His comments came as Morgan Stanley announced a 60 per cent fall in profits to $1bn and suspended a trader for mismarking his positions by $120m.The pain yesterday spread well beyond Wall Street to regional US banks and mortgage lenders. Fifth Third Bancorp of Ohio said it would slash its dividend and raise $2bn in capital. Thornburg Mortgage said the Securities and Exchange Commission had issued subpoenas in its investigation of the troubled lender's 2007 earnings restatement.
